Devin Düster
Devin Düster’s work takes as its focal point places of the every day, translating what could be perceived as arcane images into moments of quiet contemplation. In dialogue with the practices of American forebears such as Grant Wood and Neil Jenney, Düster elevates the home — both its interior and exterior spaces — with his hybridizations of painting and sculpture. Düster hand-fabricates his frames, sourcing a variety of wood species. Within these frames, he embeds small paintings and objects, extending the surfaces of his paintings into the third dimension. Whether through lush impasto, detailed brushwork, or the incorporation of family heirlooms, Düster’s own pathos and the lived histories of the spaces depicted emanate through.
