Gonçalo Preto
Gonçalo Preto (b. Lisbon, Portugal) explores the vibrant energy in silence and stillness, and how a penumbra can act as a place of revelation and omission. In his paintings, Preto employs subtle and ambiguous areas of shadow stimulate the imagination and activate visual sensitivity and nostalgia. In these shadowed spaces, the artist creates moments of suspense, visual puns, and a sense of discordant reality. Frequently, Preto's subjects come from personal references, historical facts, and scientific research which are then decontextualized and transformed into nonlinear fictional narratives. Preto has a deep interest in the mirage-like aspects of the familiar and mundane, resulting in his desire to depict the unnoticed.
