Andrew Reed Gallery is excited to announce Soft Hours, the gallery’s first exhibition of work by Chicago-based artist Thérèse Mulgrew. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. The show opens this Friday, July 11th with an opening reception from 6-8pm and will be on view through August 16th.
In Soft Hours, Mulgrew continues her recent exploration of the still-life genre, coupling it with intimate depictions of friends at leisure or going about their daily routines. Here, Mulgrew particularly accentuates in-focus moments. A serene light consistently permeates the compositions, referenced too in the title of the show. In Breakfast IV, a nude friend partially covers herself while enjoying a sumptuous first meal of the day. Late Night Toast, meanwhile, sees the entire scene bathed in a maroon light, with martini glasses and the poker table a testament to the artist’s hyperrealism. Mulgrew pays equal attention to the refraction of olives in liquid as she does the light casting off of her sitters’ fingernails and the prism which catches the crisp bills in the bottom right of the painting. In the suite of smaller works in the show, Mulgrew hones in on the details of domesticity, letting her crisp brushwork and highlighting take prominence.
